Biotechnology

About Department

The Department of Biotechnology started in September, 2005 under the School for Biosciences and Biotechnology. The present intake capacity is 30 students. Apart from M. Sc in Biotechnology, the department also offers Ph. D in Biotechnology with diverse field of specialization including Enzyme Technology and Protein Chemistry, Microbial Technology, Plant Molecular Biology, Immunotechnology and Neurobiology. Department has started M. Sc Brain & Cognition Science with intake capacity of 20 Students from the year 2012 and Department has also started M. Sc Forensic Science and Criminology with intake capacity of 20 students from the year 2013.At present M. Sc Forensic Science and Criminology shifted from School of Life Sciences (SLSC) to School of Paramedical Sciences (SPS) B. Academic Profile of Department: Biotechnology, being a multidisciplinary subject, requires knowledge from various areas of biological as well as technological sciences. It encompasses understanding of fundamental concepts and their applications in the area of Molecular biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Bio-processing. Keeping in view the developing of modern applied aspect of the subject, Biotechnology has now become a multi-billion dollar industry. The teaching programme caters the requirement of Biotechnology Industry and Institutes in India and aboard. Presently, Choice Based Credit System has been introduced and many courses which may supplement and compliment core Biotechnology subject from various discipline i.e Law, Department of Zoology, Department of Horticulture, Management, Statistics etc. have been introduced. The course curriculum of M. Sc. Biotechnology has been prepared taking the guidelines from UGC and DBT, Govt. of India modified time to time in respective BoS (Board of Studies) meetings held on 20-04-2018, 22-05-2015, 21-03-2014, 11-11-2009 and October 2005. A course curriculum of M.Sc. Brain and Cognition Sciences has also been prepared in accordance to UGC guidelines by meetings held on May 22, 2015; 24 February, 2012 respectively. Very recently modifications was done to the syllabus to incorporate some newer a relevant topics. Modifications in syllabus in consultation with the industry professionals, practitioners, students and their parents basically who are the stake holders is a continuous process. In addition to the normal teaching classes and the practical training, the curriculum has integral components of Seminars and Research based project works targeted to shape the student’s career in accordance with the requirement of the present national and international needs. The department is in the process of developing facilities conducive for training in the field of Biotechnology at par with that of international level. Faculty of the department is running various externally funded research projects from agencies like UGC, DST and DBT. Many distinguished scientists and eminent scholars from premier research institutes such as CSIR, ICAR, Indian and foreign Universities are invited to deliver lectures in their area of research interest from time to time. The students are exposed to both academics as well as extracurricular activities during their tenure.

A. Academic Endeavors of the Department-
As indicated above, the first batch of M.Sc. biotechnology students is likely to pass out in August, 2007. The students have already shown their potential by doing well in national level test as listed below.
  • Mr. Jitendra Kannaujia: Qualified CSIR NET–JRF and DBT JRF fellowship (all India second position holder in SC/ST category).
  • Ms Nidhi Singh: Qualified all India entrance exam for DBT JRF Fellowship, secured Ph.D. position in NIPGR, New Delhi.
  • Mr. Shafqat Khan : Qualified all India entrance exam conducted by J.N.U., N.Delhi for M.Tech ( Biotechnology).
  • number of students have qualified GATE (Life Sciences) and various Ph.D. programs offered by premier institutions of the country. Although the above mentioned performance of the students appears a modest one, it assumes more significance and needs to be applauded when we consider the conditions and time constraints under which the faculties and students have worked in unison and also when these results are compared with the performance of older and better equipped/ established departments of the university.Department organizes regular seminars every week and students are encouraged to choose a relevant and current scientific topic in order to enhance their knowledge as well as scientific aptitude. A study tour of III semester students was conducted by Dr Sangeeta Saxena in October 2006, to Central Institute for subtropical horticulture (ICAR). Students were exposed to several sophisticated molecular biology techniques as well as equipments like PCR, Real Time PCR, Electrophoresis, Gene gun etc. Visiting tissue culture lab of horticultural crops and learning various techniques of micropropagation was of much interest to the students. Besides, the students engage themselves in various research training program at premier institutes like IIT Kanpur, SGPGI, Lucknow and various CSIR and ICAR labs of the country. In addition to the above the departmental faculties are rendering invaluable services to the university in its managerial and other related activities. To name a few Prof M.Y.khan, in addition to his routine duties as Prof and head, is also discharging the duties of Dean, Schools of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Information Science and Technology, and Home science. Similarly Drs. D.R. Modi and G.Sunil Babu are looking after the duties of Guest House Incharge and Hostel Warden respectively.
G. Future Plans: As already mentioned that the department has started functioning since September 2005, with M.Sc. Biotechnology and recently Ph.D programme has also started in 2007. We are working a great deal to make the department fully functional by procuring books, instruments, chemicals etc. A lot of emphasis is also given to strengthen the laboratory facilities and to carry out research in respective areas of specialization.
